Inspection for wet H2S damage in sour service
Equipment exposed to H2S in service can suffer a number of degradation mechanisms, including Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) and vertical cracking. These mechanisms can occur in parent pipe or plate but welds can also be affected in H2S service, with the potential for Stress Oriented Hydrogen Induced Cracking (SOHIC).
Wet H2S mechanisms can be a significant threat to integrity, with potential for catastrophic failure in the form of rupture. Reliable information on such mechanisms is therefore critical to effective integrity management of equipment in H2S service. Sonomatic provides a comprehensive service for inspection and assessment of wet H2S damage. This includes inspections aimed at:
- Determining whether any wet H2S mechanisms are active (or confirming absence of such mechanisms).
- Characterisation of indications, e.g. discrimination between inclusions in the as manufactured state and lamellar cracking associated with HIC.
- Sizing of damage, e.g. location and extent of HIC and sizing of vertical cracking elements.
- Determination of changes over time, e.g. growth in extent of HIC, density of HIC damage.
